I don't want to be self-taught anymore. It's not enough.

You could totally get back into school if you put your mind to it.

My GPA is horrid. I bombed the last few semesters when I dual-enrolled (you know why). Ugh.

If you are persistant enough, you can definitely do it. You would have to get your GED (the easy part) and re-enroll at SFC. The awesome thing about Santa Fe is that when you bomb a class, you can retake it and the grade is replaced in your GPA, the old grade is totally dropped. You don't get this chance at UF. So technically, if you were REALLY willing to put the work in, you could get grants to help you pay for it and start over.

I just want you to know that the possibility is there. It is much easier since you haven't started a university yet. You are amazing. As hard as you work, you could totally swing it.

Talk to me about these grants.

My last financial aid experience was a fucking apocalyptic fiasco. Some idiot woman was determined to get me independent status (and apparently did not even understand why this was not a sound idea), lied to the financial aid director (without my knowledge) and when she was found out she entirely backpedaled and blamed it on ME -- and then I was accused of fraud. It was awesome and I fucking hate SFC for it, but I will still do what it takes to get back in if I can. I miss writing papers. I miss being educated.

Good News... You are automatically an independent if you are 23 as of the first of January this year. So you won't have that fiasco again.

The FAFSA should analyze your income and generate any grants or loans that you are eligible for. I still have to claim my parents' income (which is ridiculous because I pay for everything, but that's another story), and I am eligible for Subsidized Federal Loans so you should definitely be at least eligible for those (they don't have to be paid back until 6 months after you graduate at a rate of $50/month with a very low interest rate). If your expected contribution is a lot less than your need (which I'm sure it is), they should give you a Pell Grant.

So anywhoozle.. the first step is the GED, then the FAFSA.

Then all that you would have to do is retake the classes that you bombed. They would drop the old grades from your GPA (although UF doesn't because they are assholes), and you should be able to wipe the slate clean.
